C.I.E.A.F. Turkish Earthquake Relief 2023

Press release

2023 Turkey Earthquake Relief Operation

On February 6, 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred in southeastern Turkey, causing severe damage and loss of life. By February 10, the death toll has exceeded 24,000, and the number of injured was even more difficult to count. At least 5.3 million people were homeless, and 870,000 people lacked food. In the case of bad weather and lack of supplies, assistance is urgently needed. Given this, the Canadian International Educational Assistance Foundation (CIEAF) launched two actions to help the earthquake victims in Turkey, including disaster relief material collection and a disaster relief fundraising event.

  1. Disaster relief materials collection:

From February 13 to 19, the Foundation will set up a relief materials collection station in the parking lot of Richmond Curling Centre (5540 Hollybridge Way) from 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The collected materials will be transferred to the donation depot in Vancouver and sent to Turkey as soon as possible. For hygienic reasons and to reduce handling pressure, we only collect the following 11 items that are new or unused:

  • Jacket
  • Raincoat
  • Sweater
  • Gloves
  • Scarf
  • Hat
  • Socks
  • Blanket
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Thermal cup
  • Baby dispers
  1. Vegetarian Fundraising Dinner

The vegetarian dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. on February 22 to raise funds for the follow-up disaster relief work, with a goal of $200,000. The venue is Continental Seafood Restaurant at 11700 Cambie Road, Richmond. The ticket price is $100 per person ($1,000 per table). Because the restaurant donates the cost of food, all the proceeds will be allocated to disaster relief purposes, and the donor can also get a full tax receipt.

For contact and inquiries, please call the chairman of the Foundation, Tom Mah (778-838-8933), director Chak Au (778-893-8882), or secretary Angela Chow (604-439-1239).

The CIEAF was initially established to assist China after the Wenchuan Earthquake and has participated in the relief work after large-scale natural disasters, including the 2010 Haiti Earthquake, the 2011 Fukuza earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the 2013 Haiyan typhoon in the Philippines, the 2015 Nepal earthquake, and 2018 Taiwan rain disaster, etc.
