Background of CIEAF

On September 21, 1999 a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit Jiji, Nantou County, Taiwan. Dr. Chak Au, one of the founding directors of the Canadian International Education Assistance Foundation (CIEAF), led the Canadian Medical Aid Team to Taiwan immediately following the disaster. Dr. Au, an expert in mental health service and posttrauma resilience, observed the earthquake damage firsthand. He noted that of all fundamental services provided to a disaster area, what was often missing was emotional support to those who were experiencing shock and grief over lost loved ones. Then, on May 12, 2008 China’s Sichuan Province was hit by an 8.0 magnitude earthquake. Dr. Au, along with a few others who shared his passion, rushed to help. They recognized the immediate emotional needs of those impacted by the disaster. The goal was not only to provide direct post-trauma resilience building services to the victims, but to also train locals in the affected areas. In order to sustain this mission of providing post-trauma resilience building services to those in need, Canadian International Education Assistance Foundation (CIEAF) was established. On December 17, 2009 the first CIEAF Board of Directors was formed.

The aim of CIEAF is to train students, teachers, volunteers and social workers in preparation for providing resilience building services to disaster affected communities.
